Ghost Stories of the South Coast - Part 1

Three carved jack-o-lanterns glow on a stone porch step in the South Coast.

October is the perfect time to revisit the stories that give the South Coast its mix of shiver and charm. All month long, we’ll be sharing some of the region’s most memorable ghost tales, the kind that remind us how deeply history still lingers here. This time, we’re starting in Fall River.

The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast: Fall River’s Famous Haunt

“Lizzie Borden took an axe…” The rhyme is familiar, but what fills the house at 92 Second Street is something far more chilling.

Once the scene of one of America’s most notorious unsolved murders, the Lizzie Borden House is now a bed and breakfast where guests can stay overnight in the very rooms that witnessed it all. Visitors describe sudden cold spots, footsteps on empty staircases, and figures in mirrors that disappear when they turn around.

Paranormal investigators have recorded voices from upstairs, some filled with anger, others almost sorrowful. Whether or not Lizzie was guilty, something inside that home refuses to rest.

Tours and overnight stays are offered through the Lizzie Borden House, where guests can explore both the crime and the mystery that made Fall River famous.

The Quequechan Club: Where Spirits Still Mingle

Just a few blocks away, another of Fall River’s grand old buildings hides a quieter kind of haunting. The Quequechan Club, built in 1861 as a private gathering place for the city’s elite, remains one of the South Coast’s most elegant landmarks. It is also one of its most haunted.

Members and guests have reported laughter echoing through empty rooms, flickering orbs of light, and knocks that seem to answer when called upon. The most famous spirit is the Woman in White, often seen near the restaurant bar before vanishing into thin air.

The club’s story even crosses paths with Lizzie Borden’s. Before his death, Andrew Borden reportedly wanted to buy the property as a home for his daughters. He never had the chance. Some say that connection left behind a thread between the two places, one that still hums quietly through the city’s history.

You can read more about the Quequechan Club’s hauntings and history at Lizzie-Borden.com.

Learning about these hauntings gives us more than just a chill, whether you believe in ghosts or not, these tales invite us to look at familiar places with fresh eyes and a bit more curiosity.

In a region as old and storied as ours, that sense of connection is part of what keeps local history alive.

Before choosing TIDES, we kept running into agents who felt transactional or overly sales-focused. Molly was completely different. She gave us thoughtful advice throughout our home search in Westport and Padanaram and genuinely cared about helping us find the right fit for our family. She knows the South Coast market incredibly well and offered insights about neighborhoods, schools, restaurants, and even seasonal changes that we never would have known otherwise. We’re so grateful we found TIDES Real Estate Group and would absolutely recommend them to anyone moving to Dartmouth, Padanaram, or Westport.

Moving to the South Coast from out of state felt overwhelming at first, but Molly made the process feel much more personal and manageable. She spent time explaining the differences between neighborhoods in South Dartmouth, Padanaram, and Westport instead of giving us the typical sales pitch. Her knowledge of local restaurants, beaches, commuting patterns, and even how the towns change seasonally made such a difference. You can tell TIDES Real Estate Group genuinely cares about helping people find the right fit, not just closing deals. We recommend them to anyone searching for homes in Padanaram, Dartmouth, or Westport.

Sold our house fast in New Bedford without any repairs

We needed to sell our house fast in New Bedford and didn’t have the money to fix it up. Molly and her team made a fair cash offer and handled everything. We sold the house as-is, avoided repairs, and closed quickly. The process was simple and stress-free from start to finish.
