HISTORY OF MATTAPOISETT, MA

First settled in the 1750s, Mattapoisett was originally part of Rochester and officially incorporated as its own town in 1857. The town flourished in the 19th century as a shipbuilding hub, producing hundreds of vessels, including large whaling ships. The name “Mattapoisett” comes from a Wampanoag word believed to mean “a place of rest” — a fitting description for this peaceful coastal haven. Today, traces of its nautical past live on in the harbor, ship captain’s houses, and local traditions.

Fun fact: Mattapoisett was once a popular summer destination for author Herman Melville, and it’s said that his time here helped inspire parts of Moby-Dick.
