HISTORY OF MARION, MA

Originally settled in the 1670s as part of Rochester, Marion became its own town in 1852, named after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, also known as the “Swamp Fox.”

 

Fun fact: President Grover Cleveland once summered in Marion, and the town was a favorite retreat for other dignitaries and artists during the Gilded Age.
