HISTORY OF ACUSHNET, MA

Acushnet was first settled in the 1650s and officially incorporated in 1860, having once been part of the larger town of Dartmouth. The name “Acushnet” comes from the Wampanoag word meaning “peaceful resting place near water.” Historically, the town played a small but significant role in New England’s shipbuilding and whaling industries, given its proximity to New Bedford, one of the world’s whaling capitals. While neighboring cities industrialized rapidly, Acushnet maintained its identity as a small, largely agricultural town, with generations of farming families helping to shape its landscape and culture.
