Discovery Zone at the Dartmouth Mall

Ball pits, tunnels, slides, and total chaos in the best possible way. Discovery Zone at the Dartmouth Mall was the ultimate birthday party destination. Parents hovered nearby with bad coffee while kids disappeared into foam obstacles and came out sweaty and smiling.

It felt like it would be there forever.
Discovery Zone filed for bankruptcy in March of 1996, but for a lot of us, the memories are still crystal clear.

The Woodhouse Shop in Padanaram Village

For 45 years, the Woodhouse Shop was a quiet staple in Padanaram Village. Small, charming, and full of nostalgia, it was the kind of place you didn’t realize was special until it was gone.

If you grew up here, this is where you went to buy furniture for your dollhouse. Tiny chairs, tiny tables, and a lot of imagination. Simple, sweet, and unforgettable.

Dairy Chief

Summer in Dartmouth meant Dairy Chief.

Soft-serve cones, sprinkles everywhere, sticky hands, picnic tables, and summer nights that felt like they lasted forever. You didn’t need a reason to go. You just went.

If you grew up in Dartmouth, Dairy Chief wasn’t just ice cream. It was a rite of passage.

Salvador’s Ice Cream

Before trendy ice cream shops and over-the-top creations, there was Salvador’s Ice Cream.

If you grew up here, chances are you remember piling into the car on a warm summer night and heading to Salvador’s. Simple flavors, generous portions, and that unmistakable feeling that summer had officially arrived.

It didn’t need to be fancy. Salvador’s was about tradition, routine, and those small moments that somehow turn into lifelong memories.

Benny’s

If you grew up in Dartmouth, your first bike was probably from Benny’s.

From car supplies to toys, lightbulbs, batteries, pool gear, and random things you didn’t know you needed, Benny’s somehow had it all. You never went in for just one thing, and you never left empty-handed.

Big Value Outlet (BVO)

You still call it BVO, and everyone knows exactly what you mean.

Big Value Outlet was a true Dartmouth staple. The kind of store where you could find just about anything, often for less than you expected. A little chaotic, completely unpredictable, and absolutely perfect.

RIP BVO.

Round Hill Radar Tower

The Round Hill Radar Tower, often called the “martini glass,” was one of the most iconic landmarks in Dartmouth.

The base of the structure was originally built as a water tank in 1920. By 1924, it was used for experimenting with transmitting radio waves, which eventually led to top-secret research during World War II and into the Cold War era.

Although it was torn down in 2008, it remains one of the most talked-about pieces of Dartmouth history.
