Discover the Hidden Beaches of Massachusett

As the cold winter months drag on, I’m sure like many of you, I’m eagerly waiting for the warm summer weather. The sand, the ocean, the sunshine – there’s nothing better! And what better way to lift your spirits and start planning your next vacation than by checking out the beautiful beaches of the South Coast of Massachusetts?

If you’re considering a summer trip to this area, you might automatically think of Cape Cod. While Cape Cod is a fantastic destination, there’s another side of Massachusetts’ coast that often gets overlooked: the South Coast. Not only does it offer all the benefits of Cape Cod, but it also comes with fewer crowds, less traffic, and easy access to neighboring Rhode Island.

As a local real estate agent with deep knowledge of the area, I’m here to share my top beach recommendations for the South Coast. So, let’s dive in!

1. Horseneck Beach State Reservation (Westport, MA)

If you’re looking for a popular beach with plenty of space and amenities, Horseneck Beach should be at the top of your list. This expansive park in Westport offers miles of open beach, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun or for engaging in water activities like windsurfing and swimming. The beach features ample parking, with two large lots, and has facilities like showers, changing rooms, and a playground for families. It’s also a great spot for a walk along the shore, and if you’re a dog owner, the beach allows leashed dogs. Keep in mind, there’s a parking fee – $40 for non-Massachusetts residents and $13 for Massachusetts residents.

2. Fort Phoenix State Reservation (Fairhaven, MA)

Fort Phoenix, located in Fairhaven, offers more than just a beach. This historical site, which played a role in the Revolutionary War, combines a rich history with recreational activities. With half a mile of beach, this location is great for families. The beach is equipped with volleyball and tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic tables, and even hiking trails. It’s a perfect spot for those who want to balance beach time with other activities. Plus, if you enjoy history, you can explore the fort itself. Fort Phoenix is definitely a great choice for a day of fun and exploration.

3. Onset Beach (Wareham, MA)

Nestled in the town of Wareham, Onset Beach is a charming beach community that’s perfect for a relaxing day out. Onset Beach offers a beautiful stretch of sand and a peaceful atmosphere. With nearby restaurants, a pier, and plenty of parking, it’s an ideal location for grabbing a bite to eat or simply enjoying the beach with a picnic. For a quieter experience, head south along the shore to Shellpoint Beach, which offers more secluded sands. Whether you’re looking to relax or enjoy the nearby shops and dining, Onset Beach is a fantastic option.

4. Swansea Town Beach (Swansea, MA)

Swansea Town Beach is a small, picturesque beach with clean white sand and scenic views. This beach is perfect if you’re looking for a quiet and laid-back spot to enjoy the sun. It has a large parking lot, restrooms, and a pavilion area with picnic tables for a relaxing lunch by the water. If you’re bringing a boat, there’s a small boat launch available. The beach charges a small fee for parking, making it a budget-friendly option for those visiting the South Coast.

5. Silver Shell Beach (Merrill, MA)

Silver Shell Beach in Merrill is a serene and picturesque destination that captures the charm of the South Coast. Located at the end of Front Street, this quaint beach offers a relaxed and peaceful environment perfect for families and anyone seeking a slower pace. The sand is soft, the waters calm, and it’s perfect for little ones. The beach also has a small playground and washroom facilities. Though it doesn’t offer many amenities, its quiet beauty makes it a standout choice for a quiet beach day.

Why Choose the South Coast?

The South Coast offers all the charm and beauty of Cape Cod but without the traffic and congestion that often accompanies the Cape’s tourist season. The region’s prime location allows you to explore the best of both worlds: the Cape and Newport, Rhode Island, are just a short drive away.

From pristine beaches to boat rentals and marinas, there’s something for everyone on the South Coast. Whether you're coming for a relaxing vacation or an adventure-filled getaway, this area offers endless opportunities to create lasting memories.

If you're thinking of relocating to or vacationing on the South Coast, there are plenty of real estate options that can make your stay even more enjoyable.
